Semana Santa and Transfer News!
Well, has this been a week! I feel like I say that every week.😂
Anywho, this week was Semana Santa(Holy Week) and I'll start by saying... when Guatemalans do Holy Week they DO it... in a very weird, Chapin way.
To start off... BREEEAD!!! Guatemalans love their Holy week bread and I do too now. Each house has a 3ft wide and 2ft tall bin of just bread!!! My paradise.😁 I have definitely had too much bread this week.
Second, Jews. Yes Jews, but not the normal Jews you would think I'm talking about. Every night this month and every day, all day, this week there are kids ranging from the age of 5 to 18 who walk or run up and down the streets in crowds with whips, sticks, drums, horns, if it makes noise they've got it. At first I thought they were harmless until this week when the drunk men joined in. And boy do drunk Guatemalans love to talk with Gringos. I've had at least 6 bolos (drunks) chase after me in the streets, well, as fast as a bolo can walk without falling.
Exchanges. So this week I had, once again, two exchanges! One with Élder Canal from Peru and another with Élder Junco from Mexico. They are a ton of fun and taught me a lot on how I can better build relaciones and interact with members. Now the interesting part was the second transfer with Élder Junco. What should have been the last day of our transfer was Saturday. But the thing is, here in Guatemala, with every one being Catholic or Evangelico, their Sabbath is Saturday. And the fact that it was Holy Week means everything was shut down, including buses. So long story short we had a 3-day long transfer.
Transfers! Today we got transfer news!! My new companion is Élder Canal who I had exchanges with this week! And, get this ... neither of us are changing areas! Because they are combining our areas. And neither of us needs to move, cause we are keeping both of the mission houses and will be moving back and forth throughout the transfer! So I guess we both will be moving a lot actually but that's all good. I'm just happy that I finally got a washer machine at the San Miguelito house.
So with this week being Holy Week and yesterday was Easter, I figure I need to talk about Jesus a bit so...
Earlier this week I was reading The Greatest Easter Story Ever Told, by Gary E. Stevenson. He talks a lot about how Easter isn't celebrated enough the correct way and how we should find ways to celebrate Easter better, more similar to how we celebrate Christmas. "This is our greatest festival. Take Christmas away, and in biblical terms you lose two chapters at the front of Matthew and Luke, nothing else. Take Easter away, and you don’t have a New Testament; you don’t have a Christianity.” The true meaning behind Easter is sooo important. Easter should be celebrated the same, if not more than Christmas because it is so important! Easter was the day that we were saved. When it was made possible that we can live again with perfect glorified bodies. So here is my invitation to you. I know Easter has passed but, find ways to better remember Jesus Christ, whether it's through your actions and sharing what you did this weekend at church for Easter or just trying to be more like Jesus. There are many ways we can better remember Him and His sacrifice. So find a new one and do it and I know that He will bless you for it. This I say in the name of our Savior, our Redeemer, Jesus Christ, Amen.
Now I hope you all have had a great Easter and spring break! But this is it for now. Until next week!
Bug ya later🪰
